YOUR  FAMILY'S  RECIPE  FOR SUCCESS

Eating well and staying active helps kids grow up strong, healthy, and happy!

You want the very best for your family which is why it's important to feed them nutritious foods. After all, wholesome food and daily exercise helps the body to stay healthy, energized, and strong. Best of all, healthy food tastes great!

Your body needs many important nutrients every day - like Calcium, Vitamin D, and iron. No single food or food group provides all of these nutrients, so it's important to eat a variety of foods from the five basic food groups.  The five groups are Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Milk, and Meat and Beans.

Besides eating well, it's important for your family to be active. Exercising often - be it a game of tag in the park or dancing together in the living room - helps keep your family fit and healthy.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Help your kids build good eating habits by preparing and enjoying meals together.  Here are some simple ideas to get you started:

NOW WE'RE COOKING!
Cooking with your kids isn't just fun-it's healthy, too! Kids who help make meals are often more likely to eat healthy and try new foods.  Here are some tips to get you started.

SHOP TOGETHER. Take your kids to the grocery store and show them all the colorful fruits and vegetables. Have them pick out something they would like to try.

TEAM UP IN THE KITCHEN. Your kids will enjoy helping you make dinner or a nutritious snack.  Big kids (5 and older) can pour milk, measure ingredients, and set the table.  Even 3 and 4-year olds can enjoy the fun by washing vegetables and tearing up lettuce. Babies can sit in the high chair and play with plastic measuring cups and wooden spoons.

HAVE FUN! Use a cookie cutter to cut fun shapes out of pancakes, fruits, or sandwiches. Mix things up, like serving breakfast (whole grain waffles or cereal with fruit and milk) for dinner.  Nutritious food is delicious any time of day!

TIPS FOR EATING OUT

We all enjoy eating out, but restaurants often serve meals that are high in calories and low in nutrition.  Fortunately, you can make smart choices at restaurants. Worlds Fair Marina  Restaurant & Banquet is a fine an elegant water front place to eat. There are varieties  of healthy  and nutritious dishes to choose from on the menu.   Remember these tips  below the next time your family eats out:

  1. THINK SMALL. Have a regular-size hamburger-meats/chicken/turkey (vegetarian or turkey  preferably) and a small order of French fries/baked  roasted potatoes. Or share a large dish with someone.  You'll save calories and money!
  2. CHOOSE GRILLED FOODS. Grilled meats , chicken, vegetables,  may be better choices than fried foods.
  3. LOAD UP ON VEGGIES. Order a fresh side salad or veggies instead of fries or chips. And ask for  fresh lemons/limes or possible low fat dressings and sauces on the side or no dressings/sauces
  4. ORDER MILK/AND OR SELTZER WATER  INSTEAD OF SODA. Low fat milk contains important vitamins and minerals, like calcium and vitamin D. And it tastes great too and seltzer water is cool and refreshing and no extra calories instead of high sugary sodas beverages.
  5. ENJOY A SLICE. Order a cheese pizza with veggie toppings.  Have some  now, and take the rest home for tomorrow.
  6. HAVE FUN! Look for restaurants that are near play-grounds. That way your kids can enjoy a fun workout before or after their meal.
